How do we live so we can be rich toward God? What is The Truth about Treasure? Stay tuned for Bible Study #149: “Treasure Focused.”
READ: Matthew 6:19-21: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Story of two men arguing over the estate. “One’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Parable of Rich Fool. God said “Fool!” (Lk. 12:20)
Fool (Only time God says it!): “The one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”
Transition: How do we live so we can be rich toward God? What is The Truth about Treasure?
Today and all next week we are going to learn 4 truths about treasure. The first truth is...
#1 __TREASURE_____________ the Right Treasure.
What Jesus does NOT say: “Don’t treasure, value, lay up.” We are built to value treasure. What makes valuables “valuable” is that we value them. What makes treasure “treasure” is that we treasure them. This is how God made us.
What Jesus DOES say: “Treasure the RIGHT treasure.” It’s ok to treasure, to value, it just that we do it with the wrong things!
What is the wrong treasure? Consumed things. on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, In other words, most of the things we treasure that will be gone some day – the car, the house, the 401k plan – none of it will last beyond this earth. It’s all just “stuff”!
What is the right treasure? Eternal things. Treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust nor thieves. Quite frankly, it’s not too difficult to separate the two. You don’t even have to be a Christian to know that relationships with each other or our relationship with God should be more important than “stuff!” Christians, especially, should know there is more to this life than this life here and now. Jesus tells us not to forget about heaven. There’s more to this life than the here and now. There is eternity!
The indicator light – “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Want to know where your treasure is? Look for your heart. Heart, seat of your emotions, what you get excited about. Look at calendar, checkbook register, conversation.
TRANSITION: What if the indicator light is broken? For that you’ll have to join me next Monday when we talk about “The Evil Eye” and share Truth #2 about Treasure!
SUNDAY IS FATHER’S DAY - Very special sermon - How to be a M.O.D.E.L. Dad (or Mom!) Don’t miss it!
