Good Friday morning Church Requel!
Did you miss me last week? I don't think I've missed writing our Friday morning newsletter in a few years. But last Friday morning I was down for the count. Fortunately one week later I am feeling much better - though anyone going through this years crud knows that it hangs around much longer than one would think. I'm still feeling the aftershocks. Thanks for bearing up with me. I know a few of you (Chris, Nancy, Dave & Jessica) have been feeling the flu blues this year too. Hope you all recover quickly!
Marty Party Saturday At 6:30. I know we are all watching this massive snow storm making it's way through our area later today. By tomorrow night it will (hopefully) all be gone and plowed away. We're still looking forward to our social gathering time tomorrow evening.
So, what's a Marty Party? Paul Lintern came up with this great idea. We'll gather our three churches together in the Chome - that's the back area where Paul and Pam live. (What's a "Chome?" you ask? Church + Home = Chome!") We start the Marty Party at 6:30. That should be right after the Saturday Night Neighborhood Meal at the church and Oakland will already be there, because they are serving.
We will all bring snacks and beverages to share and all be in a New Year festive mood. After all, who wants to stay home and brood about the cold winter? At some point Paul will play the first half of the PBS Special, "The Idea That Changed The World." We'll watch about an hour's worth this Saturday and then the other half next Saturday. After each showing, we'll talk with one another about how much our modern world has changed because of Martin Luther and the Reformation he began 500 years ago.
Sunday's Worship Plans. Our ladies' trio will be back in action leading us in worship. Thanks for your dedication, Brandi, Trish and Missie! We'll be singing "All The People Said Amen," " No Longer Slaves," "In Christ Alone," and "What A Beautiful Name." We will also sing a brand new song (for us): "Gracefully Broken" by Matt Redman.
Brandi also has come up with the idea for us to take communion together right in the middle of our worship set. That should be really special. Thanks Brandi for your creativeness in our worship together.
I'm also looking forward to sharing with you the New Year's message I had originally planned to share with you last Sunday before I got so sick. The title to the message is "Moving Ahead" and our focus verse will be Isaiah 40:30-31.
“Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
MCS Image Will Sing Feb. 11th. This is always a very special event each year at Church Requel. We love it when the singing ensemble group from Mansfield Christian School joins us for worship one Sunday each year. Afterward we will enjoy a potluck meal together. Plan to bring some extra food to share with the MCS students and their families. (Because of your generosity of food and support, I think they love to come each year too!)
Thanks to Cindy, Marci and Mary Kay. These 3 ladies joined me last night after work at the church and took down all the Christmas decorations in the church. Everything is put away very nicely. Thanks for your service!
Mary Kay tells me that sometime soon she would like to see us get a small group together to help clean up and organize the children's area downstairs. Sounds like a great idea. If you would like to join this effort let Mary Kay know.
Temporary Clothing Closet. Also this weekend we will have a temporary clothing closet set up downstairs to provide coats, hats and gloves to those in need. It will be available during the Saturday evening meals in January, but will still be available Sunday morning. If you have extra outer wear you'd like to donate bring it with you this weekend to the meal, the Marty Party, or to worship Sunday. Thanks to the Walnut Street Clothing Closet for sharing their provisions with us!
Bring a New Song! I don't know if you've heard about this latest news or not, but it seems like God is doing some work in some of our lives with music this year. I have talked to several of you all and some of you are learning new instruments. I actually haven't been given permission to share all that I know, so hopefully you will be surprised sometime soon when you see or hear someone unexpectedly playing an instrument or singing a song.
Since I give myself permission to share just about anything and everything about my own life in this newsletter, I will confess that I have begun to take up the ukulele. I purchased it on December 31st. Playing my uke has brought me such great joy! I can't wait until I'm good enough to be able to share it with all of you!
I have been so surprised to learn about all the tutorials that are available online. I'm sure that if there is an instrument you have always wanted to play, God will make a way possible for you to learn and give Him praise with it!
Let's make 2018 the year we put Psalm 96:1 to work in our hearts and lives!
Congrats to Mark and Loni! Finally we close out this week's newsletter with the bestest of good news! Mark Baseman and Loni Nauman have announced their engagement! They plan a June wedding right here at Church Requel. Yay Loni and Mark! We are so incredibly happy for you and look forward to sharing your joy!
Love you all much. Stay warm. See you at the Marty Party Saturday or at worship Sunday morning. - Pastor Mark
