Audio Sermon: Upside-Down, Inside-Out

The "fill-in-the-blanks" section of our weekly program was most unusual this past weekend.  I thought you might enjoy reading a little background before listening to this week's audio sermon.  I was sitting at breakfast early last week with my youngest daughter Jillian.  I explained to her that sometimes a Bible passage just needs to be broken down into its component parts.  I flipped over my paper place-mat and began drawing different shapes, filling them in with the relevant Bible passages.  Thus was born our program for the weekend!  If you should download this sermon to listen, you may want to go ahead and download the PDF file (791 KB) of the weekend program to go with it!

Listen to the Siren Call of the $189 Kindle

A couple days ago I received an email from my good friend, Chuck, who told me he was tempted by the new lower price of the Kindle e-book reader. 

I am tempted to buy an Amazon Kindle. The price has dropped to $189. I noticed you've written about yours. Any suggestions you'd have for me? Would you buy it again? It is worthwhile?  I saw a friend's Kindle at work and it is impressive. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts. Thank you.

After I finished writing Chuck I thought to myself that some of my readers might like to read my answer as well.  Be advised - I am not unbiased.  Most of my close friends now own a Kindle because of my never-ending Kindle happiness.

Good morning Chuck -

Ahhh.... temptation - that siren call that leads you off into a new direction!  Sometimes, as in the case of Odysseus, the best you can do is to lash yourself to the mast to protect yourself against disaster.  But the temptation of the Kindle is one siren call that I would advise not only listening to, but following!

I love my Kindle.  To me it was a bargain at twice the present cost - which I paid in March 2009 when the Kindle 2 first came out.  I have never regretted that decision, and in fact, have been pleasantly surprised with my reading habits since.  At $189 the Kindle is a steal, barely covering the cost of the parts that go into it.  And this doesn't even include the FREE lifetime 3G service the device provides.

All this presumes that one is a reader.  Not a browser.  Not a newspaper article here and a blog post there.  But a sit-down for hours at a time reader - someone who loves to get lost in a story, carried away within the writer's universe.  For this, the Kindle is perfect.  It's lighter than most paperback books at 10.2 ounces.  It's as thin as a magazine.  And it's e-ink screen is perfect for reading anywhere where there's light.  The device itself disappears as you become engrossed within the book.

Amazon's policy of reading anywhere anytime on anything also means that you can continue your reading on your phone or on your computer and bookmark your place when you return to your Kindle.  With yesterday's release of Kindle for Android, I now read in bed with my back-lit phone until I fall asleep.  When I return to my Kindle the next day, my book is in exactly where I left off on my phone!

Transition to Ontario Christian Fellowship

The first official weekend for Church Requel at Ontario Christian Fellowship is now behind us and I thought it would be a good idea to write down everything that happened yesterday while it was fresh in my mind.  The crew showed up at 2PM to begin our setup -- and we needed every minute of it!  I'm pretty sure that the only person who was stressed yesterday was me; everyone else seemed to be working in good cheer.  Since it was our first official service at OCF there were many small choices that needed to be made - and needed to be made by me.  So each one of our crew came to me at various times to ask if this was what I wanted, or that... or would it be better another way?  I'm sure this is a function of "first time" and over time we'll get the setup as efficiently accomplished every week as we normally did over at Mid-Ohio.

I was greeted at 2PM by Dave, the full-time custodial minister at OCF, who lives right behind the church.  He saw me pull up and came right over.  It was pretty clear he was looking for me.  He walked me through every single room we were going to use to make sure everything was the way we wanted it to be.  He apologized over and over again that he was going to be out of town next weekend, but he had made sure that people would clean the church chapel area up for our usage that evening.  The whole time I was thinking to myself, 'I'd better make sure we leave this place in pristine condition when we are finished.'

Steve Thoman was able to borrow a small platform that would serve as my preaching platform.  Steve is planning on building some 4' x 4' modular platform pieces that we can use, but this borrowed platform worked very nicely in the meantime.  The platform area is small in the chapel and will (barely) accommodate our band, so an additional space is needed.  I preached from the floor when we were here over Easter, but the line of sight wasn't very good.  Being a couple feet off the ground makes an amazing difference.

We weren't able to feature our whole band yesterday on "opening day."  Our drummer had a family function, so we knew we wouldn't have percussion.  An hour before we were scheduled to begin set up, Nate texted me that the other guitarist came home from Hawaii completely sick and wouldn't be able to come.  So he was scrambling to find another guitarist.  (Thanks Stephen for filling in at the last minute.)  While we were in the midst of doing setup, I watched as Nate scrambled to write out the chord progressions... somehow that didn't fill my mind with confidence.  But as usual, I was worried over nothing.  As it turned out Nate, Trisha and Stephen did an amazing job. 

Pastor Kim Mauer to Welcome CR Sunday

It's been a whirlwind of a week as we prepare for our move to Ontario Christian Fellowship.  Last week OCF Pastor Kim Mauer and I met with his leadership board and presented our plans for using the OCF chapel on Sunday nights.  That meeting went really well.  Kim and I met afterward and set up another meeting for Tuesday of this week to commit our understanding to writing - always a good idea and a smart way to remain friendly with friends when entering into a business relationship!  We completed that work Tuesday, got approval from our two different leadership teams and signed off on the lease yesterday.

Yesterday morning I received the email newsletter Pastor Kim Mauer sent to his congregation welcoming CR to OCF on Sunday nights.  Close behind that email was another one from Kim responding to my invitation to visit Church Requel on our first Sunday night in the chapel.  I'm so thrilled he will be there.  It will be the perfect ending to three months of discussion, praying and dreaming.  Kim has been such an encouragement to me over these past two years, meeting with me occasionally for breakfast.  He really does have a Kingdom heart and a passion for Christ's work.

We have made much progress on changing over Church Requel from Mid-Ohio mode to OCF mode.  Many of the technical aspects of our church setup will need to be changed.  We'll be ready for church Sunday night, but I would imagine there will be many developments over the course of the summer as we adjust to our new venue.  Not all of our equipment has arrived (for example our second lighting tree is still somewhere in Iowa), but that will just give us more to look forward to as we move forward!

Sunday evening we will continue our normal summer worship plans.  Nate and his worship team (Trisha and Christian this week) are ready with an acoustic set that will draw us into our Lord's Presence.  We'll share communion together as always, but with a slight twist.  We're no longer restricted to using white grape juice (a Mid-Ohio requirement) and so will be able to better remember Christ's blood shed with the dark grape juice.  Mark Shaw will lead our prayer time.  Jillian Pierce will be our reader.  And I'll continue the Philippian series with a close examination of "to live is Christ, to die is gain." 

It's sure to be a great service, and maybe even a historic one!  Don't miss it.  I hope to see you Sunday night at Church Requel meeting at Ontario Christian Fellowship at 6PM. 

Ontario Christian Fellowship Welcomes CR

This morning in my email box I received the weekly email newsletter which Ontario Christian Fellowship mails to their parishioners.  I thought it would be good for our own Church Requel folks have a glimpse at the motivation behind Pastor Kim Mauer's and OCF's offer to us to use their chapel space on Sunday nights.  I particularly like the concept of partnering with another ministry.  And Pastor Kim's advice to introduce and meet one another is also great advice for us as well!  Here is their full announcement:

Church Requel Using OCF Chapel on Sunday Nights

God has greatly blessed us at OCF with wonderful, spacious facilities that help us provide MINISTRY in many ways, shapes and forms.

We're pleased to announce that we are PARTNERING with a new church-plant that meets on Sunday evenings at 6:00 pm.  Starting this Sunday, June 27, we will be renting our Chapel (and a few other associated rooms) to Church Requel, led by pastor Mark Pierce, a good friend of mine.  Mark is a local guy, a sincere believer, a solid evangelical, and a good pastor who is committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

 

It's good for OCF to look beyond our own "personal kingdom" and work to promote the Kingdom of God in our community.  I understand this is new concept to some, but let's try to look beyond ourselves to the bigger picture of what God is calling us to do.  If we only view this as a "nuisance" or as a "money-making proposition" then we're missing the point.  I believe God wants to teach us some things about SHARING and GENEROSITY beyond what only benefits us.  We have an opportunity to BLESS this new church, and if we do this with a good attitude, God is pleased and we will be blessed.

So, if you meet someone you don't recognize on a Sunday afternoon or evening, introduce yourself and make them feel welcome.  Let's encourage and PRAY for Church Requel.  Learn more about them at http://churchrequel.org.

Church Requel Relocating This Weekend!

Greetings everyone!  I have some exciting news to share with you!  Beginning this coming weekend, Church Requel will begin conducting its services every week at the church facilities of Ontario Christian Fellowship, located at 636 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd. just one mile south of Richland Mall.

You might recall that we met there for Palm Sunday and Easter.  Subsequent to those weekends, the leadership of Church Requel has been in prayer and discussion with the leadership of OCF.  They have been most generous to make their facility available to us on a weekly basis for our Sunday evening services.  Our board of directors have decided to make this move for several great reasons:

• We will have access to the facility each and every weekend.  This will provide us with greater stability. Since we began offering public services at Mid-Ohio back in October, there have been 5 weekends which were unavailable.  Mid-Ohio is closed on holidays - they would have been closed again on the 4th of July.  And every Christmas and Easter!  While we loved the facility at Mid-Ohio, we wanted a place to meet which can accommodate us each and every weekend.

• The children’s rooms are fantastic at OCF.  We believe that growing our children’s ministries is one important key to our future growth.  In addition, we are now offering classes for all children up through elementary age!
  

• Our weekly occupancy expense will be 1/3 less at OCF than it was at Mid-Ohio.  And this includes access to the children’s rooms.  Also, we love the idea that our rental expense will be supporting another fantastic ministry!

We have been repeating a motto recently at the Church Requel weekend services:  Same church.  Same time.  New location.  We'll still be the same Church Requel.  We are not becoming a part of Ontario Christian Fellowship.  We are becoming partners with them in the gospel message and renting their very nice facility.  We will still be meeting at the same time - 6PM on Sunday evening.  But we will have a new location.

I have sometimes joked that anyone can worship with Church Requel, providing that they can first find us!  Hopefully this move will give us a more permanent location that will help people know where to find us.  For some, I’m sure, the fact that our church is actually meeting in a church will be a positive.  However, I want to emphasize the most important aspect - one I’m sure you all will agree with - it really doesn’t matter where we meet, so long as we continue meeting!  I’m at Church Requel when I’m with you!  We want to make this move and leave no one behind.   I hope to see you Sunday night at 6PM.

Father's Day Videos at Church Requel

This past weekend we experienced a terrific Father's Day at Church Requel.  It was our last service at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center.  Starting next weekend we begin meeting at Ontario Christian Fellowship.  Church Requel is still Church Requel.  And we still will meet at 6PM.  But we will have a new location.  Same Church.  Same Time.  New Location.

I thought some of you who attended our Father's Day service might enjoy watching our special Father's Day videos a second time.  And if you missed this past weekend, well at least you'll have some idea on what you missed!  Our opening video was a really cute, 3-minute look at the things you shouldn't write in your Father's Day Cards.  Here's a sampling:

• I hope I grow up to be just like you, not including your hairline, of course.
• The truth is I've been giving you the same tie from the back of your closet since I was 8.
• Dad, I always feel closest to you when you're taking care of me.  Let's bond.  Got 20 bucks?

We had a video recognizing all different kinds of Fathers.  I especially liked the part where the child spills the milk and Dad first was tempted to get mad, but went ahead and spilled his milk too.  (I wonder if Mom cleaned up the milk?)  Here's Father's Day: A Broader Perspective by Floodgate Productions.

Before our sermon, we showed this especially poignant video clip showing just how closely our children follow our path.  I couldn't help but think of my preschool grandchildren following my son Jonathan everywhere he goes.  Here's "In His Shoes" by Shift Worship:

Finally, during the sermon to illustrate the story of someone who has progressed through serious setbacks, we told the story of Bethany Hamilton.  Bethany was a 13-year old competitive surfer when she was bitten by a 14-foot tiger shark and lost her arm.  Here is the video we showed during the sermon:

Father's Day Tribute to My Dad

The photo on the left was taken yesterday morning of me and my dad.  His name is Walt and I describe him as my biggest fan.  As I sit on my front porch on this Father's Day morning, I am thinking of some of the really great ways Dad has been a father to me.

He taught me to defend myself when I was six years old and a local bully was picking on me.  He taught me the value of serving God and others when he would take me with him to set up chairs for Sunday School on Saturday mornings.  He taught me a great work ethic as I watched him work hard and advance in middle management with Sieberling Tire and Rubber Company.  He taught me the necessity of defending the family, when armed robbers broke into our home one Saturday afternoon in 1971.  He taught me the value of overcoming obstacles when, after 26 years, the tire plant closed down and Dad began a second career as a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch. 

Dad came to everything I ever did.  He never missed.  He came to every Boy Scout event, hiking and camping his weekends away with me.  He attended every concert, every play.  He watched every football game - including every game in which I sat on the bench my first three years of ball.  And to my knowledge, he's never missed a "Grandpa" opportunity, coming every time we've invited him to one of our own four children's functions.

Dad continues to be my best friend and great adviser.  I love talking with him.  Sometimes I have no destination in mind with my words, but I need to get something out... and he will listen.  I feel like he's always on my side, always seeing through my perspective, always and in every way cheering me on.  On this Father's Day I want to say, "Thanks Dad!"  I know I have been most blessed with a caring, loving, supportive and faithful dad.

Shark Attack on Father's Day at CR This Weekend!

Wow!  Do we ever have a great weekend lined up at Church Requel!  I promise you that you will not want to miss our Father's Day weekend!

There are so many things happening, I don't know where to begin.  How about at the beginning?  I found a Father's Day countdown video to begin our service that is really funny.  (So now I'm telling you that you don't want to just come this weekend... you're gonna want to arrive at CR three minutes early!)

Nate and the Praise Team have put together a worship and praise package that is truly incredible.  For the first time on the Church Requel platform, we have Guitarist Luke Edwards (along with regulars Stephen and Ryan).  Luke will be playing a guitar solo at the end of "Another Hallelujah" that will really help us lift our hallelujahs in praise to God.  Also included in the worship set this weekend are favorites, "One Way," "Glory To God Forever," and "We Fall Down."  I have to tell you that Nate and his team just seem to get better and better every week.  This weekend will be their best yet!

During our teaching time, we'll learn the "5 Setback Lessons Dads Should Teach Their Children."  Our lives include both progress and setbacks.  But often we either don't like to talk about the setbacks or we pretend that they're not really there.  Of course the truth is that life is filled with setbacks; it's how we respond to these setbacks that determine our character as well as give us insight into unexpected opportunity.  Our Scripture text will be Philippians 1:12-18.

And don't forget - this will be our LAST WEEKEND for Church Requel to meet at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center.  So you won't want to miss our "farewell" service to our home these past 9 months.  So I hope to see you this Sunday evening at 6PM at Mid-Ohio located at 890 West Fourth Street across from Arlin Field.

Elements of a Good Sermon by Haddon Robinson

Here's some great advice about preaching from Haddon Robinson a professor from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary as well as a popular radio broadcaster on the show, Discover the Word.  Frankly, I wanted to make sure that I personally never forget this message - that's why I include it here.  But if you have two minutes and forty seconds, you might want to watch the YouTube video below.

7 Elements of a Good Sermon:

1. Oriented to the Scriptures, but it's also oriented to the men and women in the pews.   
2. A good sermon bridges the gap to the 21st century.
3. A good sermon is well delivered. 
4. It's also spontaneous.  
5. Simple - Takes profound truth and states it in a way that people can understand.
6. Good preaching is enthusiastic.  The hearer feels this person wants to be heard. 
7. Authentic - Message comes from the inside.

A Two-Day MacBook Break

Hey everyone!  I'm back from a two-day "MacBook Break." I left Mansfield immediately after the Church Requel service Sunday evening and drove the 3 hours down to my brother Todd's home in Mason, Ohio.  He had been having troubles with his 2-year old Dell laptop.  After some very frustrating  and poor tech support - he was ready to make the switch to the MacBook world, which I have so fallen in love with over the past year. 

We spent most of the day Monday getting the info off of his crippled Dell (an excruciating experience which reminded me of just how important a good back up policy really is!) and then headed off to the Apple Store.  Todd is so lucky.  The store is only 16 miles from his house! 

As always we had a great experience at the Apple Store.  They have completely revolutionized retailing.  We spent about 40 minutes with one of the expert Apple salespersons, who very patiently answered all of our questions.  After Todd said, "Yes, this is what I want," the fellow inputted some info into one of the computers and within seconds another person had brought out the equipment Todd ordered.  Our salesperson never broke contact - having to leave and go find things and then bring them back.

I then invested another 24 hours (including a night's sleep) getting Todd all set up, and with great joy, explained to him how his new MacBook worked differently than he was accustomed to in the Windows world.  For those of you who enjoy this, here is a 38 second video of the unboxing (which, by the way, is the first video I have taken with my new HTC Evo phone - but that's another story for another day!).  

This Weekend at CR: Prayer Is Not Rocket Science!

"Prayer is not rocket science," according to Church Requel chief rocket scientist Dr. Marvin Orville Blevin.  (Who's Dr. Belvin, you ask?  You gotta show up to see! ... Bet you didn't know we had a chief rocket scientist!)  We will learn from an even greater authority - the Apostle Paul - how we should pray for one another.  We'll continue our study of Philippians, considering Paul's model prayer in Phil. 1: 9-11.  Along the way we'll also hear from one of the greatest college football coaches of all time - Ben Schwartzwalder, who will teach us the meaning of "ex bonis optima."  I promise you it will be an evening you won't want to miss.

Nate also has a great worship set and band planned for tomorrow evening.  Joining Nate will be Mark, Dave and Ryan (of course and all the rest of the Church Requel congregation) singing:

Welcome to the World, Lila!

My son, Jonathan, and his lovely wife, Bethany, had child #4 and girl #1 on Tuesday of this week.  Her name is Lila Eliana Pierce.  She came in beautiful and healthy at 6 pounds, 8 ounces.  Lila is our 6th grandchild - we now have three grandsons and three granddaughters!  My Facebook friends can see more photos here.  (Not my Facebook friend yet?  Friend me!)  I've been disconnected from the internet for the last couple days in celebration.  Honestly... I'm still feeling pretty happy!  Congratulations Jon and Bethany!

We had a great service tonight at Church Requel.  I love Sunday nights!  The people who come to Church Requel have really learned to love one another.  It's becoming a special place.  We began a new teaching series this evening.  This entire summer we will be studying our way through Paul's letter to the Philippians.  In this first study of Paul's letter to the Philippians, we learn seven building blocks for praying for someone else.  Join me as we examine Philippians 1:3-8.
