Church Requel plans to give away meals to the hungry in the Mansfield area on the Saturday before Easter. Our goal? To give away enough meals to feed one hundred families in Richland County. For Church Requel, a church with 65 to 75 attendees at it's Sunday evening services, this is the very definition of a BHAG - a big, hairy, audacious goal!
Here's how it happened. Sheri Pryor, one of our newer congregants, along with her friends Jack, Becky, and Rodger decided to challenge the rest of our church to give away 50 meals on the Saturday before Easter. Here is what the rest of our congregation should bring with them every Sunday evening:
- cans of green beans and / or corn
- cans of fruit cocktail
- boxes of mac and cheese
- stuffing mix and bread
- boxed desserts like brownies or cake mix with icing
In addition to these food items, two families in our church are donating 50 frozen turkeys. Then, a local business agreed to donate 50 bags of potatoes. Then, a third family in our church upped the ante and said they would like to double the goal to 100, and they will give whatever is necessary to raise the meals given to 100!
Last weekend was our first weekend for people to bring food. We set out a table for the food, which was quickly swamped with bags of food overflowing to the floor below! Regularly God is showing me that my own faith is way too small for what He has in mind!
Here is the video that we showed to our congregation last weekend, outlining our original goal to feed 50 Richland County families. Enjoy this short, 3-minute video!
