This Week at CR: God's Antidote to Busyness

Good Friday morning Church Requel!

Welcome to our first unofficial summer weekend of 2013! Is anyone else excited besides me? Mary Kay and I are visiting our youngest daughter Jillian in Dayton for a couple days. It was so marvelous to wake up to the sun shining, the birds singing, and the bees making honey! I ran along the Little Miami River this morning - it was so beautiful. God is so good!

Having received my morning dose of endorphins, I'm now down at Panera Bread with my dark roast coffee. I'm so thrilled for the way our church is growing. I want to tell you about our "busyness" topic this weekend AND some new plans we've made for The Miss Ohio Pageant on June 16th. 

Sunday Morning: God's Antidote To Busyness.  We continue our summer Stressbusters series this weekend. Our topic Sunday? Busyness. I think Rob Bell got it right with this quote: "Busy is a drug that a lot of people are addicted to." 

Here's a brief quiz to see if learning about God's Antitodote to Busyness would be good for you... or someone you know.

1. Are you always in a hurry?
2. Is your "to-do" list unrealistically long?
3. Do you use your days off to catch up with work?
4. Has more than one person told you to slow down?
5. Do you feel guilty when you relax?
6. Do you have to get sick to take time off?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then Sunday morning is designed just for you! And if you think that being a Christ follower means even more work... then wow! You need to be at CR Sunday morning. We're going to talk about how to unwind God's way. How to really R.E.L.A.X. (Here are the study notes.) The worship service starts promptly at 11am. Come early and bring a guest!

June 16th: Miss Ohio Pagaent Potluck and Parade. Check out this photo of the Miss Ohio contestants from last year. Do you recognize where they are standing? If you answered, "on the front steps of Church Requel," you got it right!

Friends, we have an outstanding opportunity to serve our community and get the good word out about our church. The Miss Ohio parade will be Sunday, June 16th at 2pm... and it will start at Church Requel!

The contestants will be at our church from noon until the parade starts at 2pm. We are also inviting them to attend CR at 11am, if any of them would like to do so. Pastor Steve will be bringing our message that morning on "God's Antidote to Indecision." After our church service, I'd like to invite all of you to stay for a church potluck. After the potluck, we're planning on serving our community by passing out water bottles to everyone waiting for the parade to start along Park Avenue West. If you can help with the potluck, talk to Sheri Nichols. If you can help pass out water bottles, talk to Randy Craig. Let's make the most of this opportunity to serve!

Well Done on Memorial Day! While we're on the topic of parades and serving our community, thanks to all of you who showed up in such a big way this past Monday for the Memorial Day parade. About half of our church showed up, many more than I was expecting... especially with the rainy weather we experienced Monday morning. We served our veterans with a flag pole dedication and the opening of "The Point of Freedom." 

I have so much more to tell you about our Memorial Day parade, but I think I'll encourage you to listen to the podcast so we can keep this week's newsletter to a reasonable length. You'll also have the opportunity to re-listen to last week's talk, "God's Antidote to Worry." I think I received about as much positive feedback on this sermon as any other!

This Week at CR: Stressbusters, Potluck, Flagpole and Parade! Wow!

Dear Church Requel family,

I don't often put "Wow" in the header, but this weekend... well, "Wow!" is the best word I have in my vocabulary for all the cool things happening at CR this weekend! We start our new "Stressbusters" sermon series, we enjoy our first potluck meal at the new church building, we dedicate the new flagpole with a hundred veterans, and we help start a parade. How does it get better than than?

Sunday Morning at 11am - Stressbusters. We begin our new sermon series, Stressbusters, this Sunday. For the next 7 weeks we will be studying Psalm 23. We'll learn what God is really like. We will discover just how much He loves us. Psalm 23 paints a picture of God for us. The more we understand God, the better we can trust Him.

Each week we'll consider a source of stress. This weekend we talk about God's antidote to worry. We all worry at one time or another, even though it's unhelpful, unreasonable, and unhealthy. Psalm 23 teaches us why it's also unnecessary! You will be so encouraged after listening Sunday morning - don't miss!

Brandi will lead our singing and will also bring us a special song on the topic of worry. Steve will lead our prayer and communion time. Nancy will read our Scripture. All by itself, Sunday morning's service would make for an awesome weekend. But wait! There's more!

Potluck Meal After Church. We love our potlucks at Church Requel and this one is sure to be special - for 2 reasons. First, this will be our first potluck we'll enjoy together at the Point of Grace, our new church location. Can you believe it? We've been here since Christmas Eve and we've served many neighborhood meals, but we haven't yet enjoyed fellowship with one another at our own potluck down in our kitchen.

Second, about half the folks who now come to CR started coming this year and have never been to one of our potlucks. Boy - are they in for a great surprise! The Church Requel potluck has to be experienced first hand. My words fail me. The amount of food - and the diversity of food is simply amazing. My best advice for those who haven't been to one yet... come hungry!

Potlucks at CR are family fellowship time. We get to know one another better. And we often talk about things going on at the church. It gives us an opportunity to relax and take our time together. We ask that families bring one main dish and one side dish or dessert. Single folks bring one dish of any kind. We'll provide plates, silverware, coffee, water and lemonade.

The New Flagpole Landscaping

Veteran's Flagpole Dedication @10am Monday. The new flagpole looks awesome. What's even better than a new flagpole will be one hundred veterans, who will help us dedicate it Monday morning! Pastor Paul Lintern and his friends have done an amazing job with the flagpole landscaping. Monday morning at 10am - 30 minutes before the parade begins - the veterans marching in the parade will join us for a very special dedication. Paul will share some history, I'll pray, and together we will all sing "The Star Spangled Banner." Of course we will be using the bell tower speakers!

I'm so excited to be partnering with Paul and the Point of Grace! How cool is it that God has allowed us to be the strategic starting point of four different parades a year?

 Let's Support The Parade! We'll have a hundred or so veterans, a couple marching bands, and lots of other folks milling around in our front yard Monday morning. Why not put our best foot forward? We're going to erect a tent with some tables. We'll put out coffee and buy some cases of waters. We need all the Church Requel folks who have an extra hour to spare to come down to the church Monday morning and help serve our community. We will print up some brochures about the Point of Grace and Church Requel and let people know who we are. This should be a great chance to get the word out. We'll have a signup sheet Sunday at church so we can know how many can come help.

Tech Booth Paneling Installed! Work continues on the inside of the church too. Pastor Steve has been a busy man installing the new paneling to the sides of the tech booth. I stopped in at the church this morning and took this picture on the right. Doesn't it look awesome?

By the way, two weeks ago I asked another trivia question about the rectangular hole that Steve built into the wall of the tech booth. Why did he do that? Many of you guessed, but Brandi Walker won the prize. She was the first to guess that the small window will be used to provide communion to the tech team each Sunday! Congrats Brandi!

Baptistery Special Fund. Four weekends ago we announced that we are raising funds to purchase a new portable baptistery for Church Requel. This will give us the ability to continue our tradition of baptising people within our worship services - always such a great blessing to everyone! As you can see in the photo on the left, when not in use the baptistery will store away nicely.

So far we've raised $670 for our new portable baptistery. Two hundred eighty dollars came in last week alone! Thanks so much for your generosity. This special fund opportunity will be available to you for just two more weeks. We are so grateful to Jack and Sheri Nichols for their willingness to make up financially whatever is lacking at the end of this special fund-raising time.

#058: Godficiency [Podcast]

This week I talk about the big wedding day last Saturday, followed by another big day Sunday. My brother, Todd, filled the CR pulpit for me Sunday and preached a great message, "Godficiency." Much of the discussion in the first half of the podcast comes from some great dialog between Todd and me and then between Steve and me. This Week at CR: Godficiency

Good morning Church Requel!

Wedding bells are ringing at the Pierce household as we are now just one day away from giving our daughter away in marriage. Jessica and Dave are planning to exchange their vows tomorrow afternoon.  Those of you who have attended
Church Requel for awhile will recognize Jessica in this photo on the left.  However, as I walk her down the aisle, the photo on the right gives you an idea of who I will be remembering. As every father who has ever walked his daughter to the altar can attest: 'How did she grow up so fast?' I am so thrilled for both Dave and Jess.  After a recent pre-marriage counseling session with my good friend, Pastor Tony Pingitore, Dave told me this: "If it's possible, I'm even more excited about our marriage now!"

Todd Pierce at Church Requel - We will have an outstanding worship experience at Church Requel this Sunday morning.  Since I knew I might be slightly distracted this week, long ago I asked my

brother, Todd, to step into the CR pulpit Sunday morning. The photo on the left is one of my favorites of Todd on a mission trip to Central America. Todd is now retired from the ministry, but he was a pastor for 28 years. Todd was also a church planter. In fact, I received my inspiration to start Church Requel by watching Todd in action. We often attended church planting conferences together. I remember thinking, 'Some day I'd love to be able to do this!' Be careful what you wish for! Seriously - I believe that 15 years ago God began working in my life and preparing my heart to become a pastor of a new church.  We can all be thankful of Todd's influence in my life.

Godficiency Sunday Morning - Wednesday I got my first peek at Todd's sermon for Sunday. It's a good one folks! He even made up a new word just for us: "Godficiency." You'll have to come Sunday to hear all about it. We will consider Jesus' prayers of thanksgiving and 3 false illusions that he exposes in our lives. Knowing Todd like I do, there will probably be at least one embarrassing 'brother' story peppered in as well. 

Even More On Sunday! Sunday's 11am service will be awesome on so many levels. Cindy and Sharma will sing with me on the praise team. Pastor Steve has prepared a special "magic key" children's sermon. And my youngest daughter, Jillian, and her husband, Tim - both in town for the wedding weekend - have agreed to sing a special song called, "Nothing Is Wasted." (Do you want to get ready for an incredible worship experience? Watch this music video of "Nothing Is Wasted" by Elevation Worship.) We will also share communion and pray together.

Stressbusters - New Sermon Series This Summer at CR

This summer at Church Requel, we’re going to look at our seven greatest sources of stress. They are all found in Psalm 23. The antidotes are also found in Psalm 23, the most beloved psalm of the Bible. It tells us what God is really like. The more we understand God, the easier it will be for us to trust Him!

May 26th - God’s Antidote to Worry. Worry is unhelpful, unreasonable and unhealthy. The antidote is to believe God will take care of me. God is the Shepherd who provides, protects, guides and corrects. We’ll learn 3 ways to make God the good Shepherd of our lives.

June 2nd - God’s Antidote to Busyness. Are you always in a hurry? Is your “To Do” list always unrealistically long? God is interested in your rest and relaxation. He wants you to live a whole, balanced and complete life. We’ll learn the prescription for pressured people - to R.E.L.A.X.

June 9th - God’s Antidote to Damaged Emotions. We all need to have our souls restored sometimes. We get hurt. Life’s tough. God wants to take out our emotional garbage. He wants to restore our souls. How? We’ll learn to make 3 changes about our guilt, grief and grudges.

June 16th - God’s Antidote to Indecision. Life is a series of choices. Success is a matter of making wise decisions. We make decisions and then our decisions make us! How do we know God’s will? We’ll learn 4 things we must do to let God guide us in the right path.

June 23rd - God’s Antidote for Dark Valleys. All sunshine and no rain makes a desert. It’s the dark valleys of our lives that give us depth and maturity. Even in our darkest days, God is there. We’ll learn 5 facts about the dark valleys and then what to do when we’re in those valleys.

June 30th - God’s Antidote to Your Hurt. Relationships are our greatest blessing and joy, but also the greatest source of stress in our lives. How should we respond when we are hurt by someone we love? We’ll learn what not to do, and then how God overflows us with healing.

July 7th - God’s Antidote to Fearing the Future. Do you never enjoy today because you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow? We’ll learn to gain the confidence that God is watching over us, that His grace is working in us, and that Heaven is waiting for us.

6 Characteristics of a Mom's Faith [Sermon Notes]

Every week I publish my sermon notes so that you may read them for yourselves.  For my parishioners, this could be a good review from the weekend before.  And it gives you a chance to see what I intended to say!  For other pastors and ministers, feel free to borrow and use any of this material.  I'd love for God to be glorified by you incorporating these notes into your own worship.

A Mother’s Faith - 05.12.13

Scripture: 2 Timothy 1:5-7 / Video: In Her Steps [1:40]

Challenge of Mothers Day - for some of us, it’s a great day of celebration. Great moms. New moms. Most kids (grandkids) moms. Longest moms. But for others, Mother’s Day brings sorrows. Lost moms. Almost moms. Wish they could be moms. Not good moms.

Illustration: conversation with woman who couldn’t have children. “Lots of different kinds of moms.” Here’s the question we want to be asking today - Do you have influence over others? Greatest task of any mom - or of any person - is to possess a true Christian faith and instill into another person’s life (child or otherwise).

What does a mother’s faith look like? (Read 2 Tim. 1:5-7 / p. 832)

6 Characteristics of a Mother’s Faith:

1. A faith that is ___SINCERE___ .

“I have been reminded of your sincere faith.” 2 Timothy 1:5a

Sincere = ἀνυπόκριτος anupókritos  = “not hypocritical,” not an act, genuine. Where we get the word actor. A child watching Mom knows if the way she acts in public is the same as the way she acts in private. Sometimes we get “sincere” wrong... George Burns used to say, “Sincerity is everything. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.” To pass the “sincere” faith test, we need to do 3 things:

1.  Make sure our faith is genuine. Need times of examination.
2.  Need to allow protege close enough to see the authentic me
3.  Accept my failures. Don’t hide my mistakes.

What always impressed me about my own mom’s faith, was not the perfection of her faith, but the direction of her faith. I knew that her prayers (along with her struggles) were genuine.

Transition: The best sermons are lived and not preached.

This Week at CR: Mother's Day!

Good Friday morning everyone!

Pastor Mark here with all your week's Church Requel news. Things have really been shaping up around here lately. You'll notice lots of cool changes when you come to church Sunday morning. (Like what else is new, right?)

Our new "Stressbusters" sign!

First off, when you cross the street from the parking lot, you'll notice our new sign promoting the summer sermon series, "Stressbusters." We've had these two sign boxes, one on the Marion Avenue side and another on the Park Avenue side, just sitting empty. From now on we will use these signs to promote what's going on at CR!

One cool story - as Steve and I was installing this sign a lady across the street yelled out to us that it was so nice seeing the church active again. Of course we invited her to attend Sunday! She said "I just might do that!" If nothing else our new sign attracted one newcomer!

Pastor Paul has been busy outside. You'll notice the front door has been painted what he calls a bright "Reformation Red!" Paul also has been busy with the new Veteran's Park outside our front door on the point where Marion meets P.A.W. We now have a new flagpole, where the Stars and Stripes will fly proudly high. Thanks, Paul, for being such a great partner with us!

Once again, Pastor Steve has put all of us to shame with his continuing efforts on our new tech booth. I took 3 pictures to share with you in this newsletter. The first picture shows the new steps installed up to the tech booth. Steve came up with a great idea to put a hinged floor on top of the steps. That way, once the tech team is up in the booth, they can close the floor down on top of the steps to give them a lot more space to work in. Brilliant!

Also while Steve was working on putting in the drywall to the tech booth this week, he came up with another great idea. 'Why not put a hole in one side of the tech booth?' he thought to himself. Do you have any idea why Steve thinks we should have a hole in the side of our tech booth? I won't tell you here. You'll have to guess by emailing me. I'll give out the answer in next week's newsletter. The first one to guess the right answer will win a $5 coupon to Dairy Queen! Let's have some fun!

Sunday is Mother's Day! It's not too late to be buying Mom a card and maybe a gift. You dads out there also need to be figuring out a nice Mother's Day gesture for your wife. I learned a long time ago not to fall back on the "It's the kid's job to honor Mom" defense. 

We plan to have an awesome Mother's Day worship service at Church Requel this Sunday. This will be our very first Mother's Day at the Point of Grace and we aim to make it special. In addition to some great singing (we picked all our mom's favorite songs), we have some cool videos along with a brand new sermon I've written about the six characteristics of a Mom's faith. I'm looking forward to celebrating with you Sunday morning.

"Today Is The Day" [Sermon Notes]

Today Is The Day - 05.05.13

Intro: Talk about my friend Michael, who died unexpectedly. I have been reminded anew of the truth of James:

 “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that’.”  James 4:13-15 NIV (p. 852)

This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t make plans. It means that we always need to recognize that we are not in control of our own futures. Compared to the eternal God, our mortal life is like a mist. Like a fog.

I can’t change ___YESTERDAY___.

I have no guarantee of ___TOMORROW___.

May not be a new lesson, but one worth reminding myself of daily. Otherwise I squander the day and lose opportunity. Today is all we have. This is why the psalmist...

 “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12 NIV (p. 413)

Illustration of $86,400 a day. What if each day you were given $86,400 to spend on anything you wanted. But anything you didn’t spend you lost. NO SAVINGS! NO BORROWING! How hard would you work to spend every last dime? This is what our lives are. Each day we have 86,400 seconds, no more, no less. We use them or we lose them.

The more we live in each moment, the more we become like God:

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’.” Exodus 3:14 NIV (p. 40)

Isn’t this fascinating, because if there is anyone Who has the power to change yesterday and Who has the guarantee of tomorrow, it the Almighty! Yet He more than anyone identifies Himself as the “I Am.” Always in this present moment - for all eternity!

So how do we make the most of this moment? How do we best live in today?

This Week at CR: Feed The Hungry & This Is The Day!

"This is the day the Lord has made. Let's rejoice and be glad today!" Psalm 118:24 GWT

Good Friday morning Church Requel!

We have a wonderful weekend in store for us! I'm so excited to share it with you. And I know you, too, are really looking forward to the great things God will accomplish among us over the next 3 days.

Saturday Night - Feed The Hungry. Tomorrow evening is our turn to feed the hungry in our neighborhood. All week long you have been dropping off food, so I know you are all looking forward to serving together. You've done this so many times most of you know the drill. However, some of you are new and this is your first time. There are two ways you can help out. (1) Make a dessert. We have a good, solid meal lined up for everyone. Adding a homemade dessert is a special treat for many of our guests. You can bring your dessert with you on Saturday if you are volunteering, or drop them off at the church no later than 4:30pm Saturday. (2) Come and help! The more volunteers we have the better. If you are planning on volunteering, please show up by 4:00. Our guests will arrive between 4:30 and 5:00 and will wait upstairs in the auditorium. We serve meals for one hour starting at 5:00pm. Cleanup is usually over by 7:00pm.

Sunday Morning at 11am. Our worship service will emphasize the theme, "This is the Day!" From beginning to end, we will focus on the fact that today - this moment - is all we really have. We can't change our yesterdays. We have no guarantee of tomorrows. So we need to make the most of every moment we have. We'll talk about the fact that each day is not about us; rather it's all about God! The point of our lives is to point to Him!

There are a few special things happening this Sunday. For one, Sharma and Anna are both singing with me on the Praise Team Sunday morning. This is their first time and I know they are both really excited to be on the team. We really enjoyed our rehearsal last night. Both bring great worship skills to the platform. Sharma has a great voice and a beautiful, worshipful heart. Anna is one little animated praise machine! She also has a few fun surprises for you! You won't want to miss a moment so plan on coming early Sunday morning.

We also have a fun children's sermon in mind for Sunday morning. As always I'll hold back the details so you and the children can be surprised. I will, however, drop a few hints. The sermon involves sunglasses and a portrait of Jesus. Hmmm...

#055: Bicycle Morning [Podcast]

This week's podcast includes some personal updates. I'm planning on biking around town a lot more and am training for GOBA. The half marathon is coming up this Saturday. Will I be ready? I talk a bit about Jessica's wedding plans - coming up soon on May 18th! I read the lyrics of the Cinderella song and fight getting choked up. We hope to add at least one new leader to our team, maybe two. What do we look for in a leader? I talk about the 3 C's. Yesterday was a planning day for me, so I let you in on our sermon plans for the next 3 months. Finally, we play back last weekend's last Toxic sermon: "Toxic Religion."
